UPDATE + FIX: Microsoft halts distribution of WP7 update to Samsung
Microsoft has halted distribution of the first Windows Phone 7 update to Samsung devices following complaints that the update left some handsets in a ‘bricked’ state.
A Microsoft spokesperson had the following comment:
“In response to this emerging issue, we have temporarily taken down the latest software update for Samsung phones in order to correct the issue.”
No timescale for a revised update has been given other than it will be available “as soon as possible.”
The problem as reported seemed to occur at stage 6 of 10 of the update process, and seems to be restricted to Samsung handsets with certain firmware configurations. Affected handsets caused Zune software to display the following error:
RESTORATION ERROR
An error prevented the restoration of your phone to its previous version.
Your phone can’t be used in its present condition and there are no restore points for it on this computer. The phone might restart and return to normal if you disconnect it. For further assistance, contact your mobile operator.
ERROR CODE
C101002E
To prevent further problems Microsoft has temporarily halted distribution of the update to all Samsung WP7 handsets.
Peter Bright of Ars Technica sums up the situation perfectly:
It’s amazing. Given the importance that Microsoft’s smartphone platform should have-not to mention the uphill struggle it faces against the iPhone and Android juggernauts-one would have thought that the company would make sure that delivery of the first patch was rock solid and reliable.
If you’re one of those affected, here’s a possible fix for those with bricked handsets:
* Unplug the handset from the computer and place on charge.
* Turn handset off.
* Turn handset back on holding Power + Camera + Volume Down buttons.
* Hold buttons for 15 seconds. Continue to hold if asked if you want to format SD card. Keep holding the three buttons until handset enters ‘Download mode’ which will reinstall the OS.
* If handset doesn’t reboot within 15 minutes, switch it off and on.
* Handset should be ready to set up again.
It also emerges that despite repeated assurances from Microsoft to the contrary, carriers can block updates from being sent to WP7 handsets.
These bricked WP7 Samsung handsets stand as a good example of why a one-size-fits-all update across multiple devices and OEMs is far from an ideal situation. Something here obviously slipped passed Microsoft during the testing phase, and as more handsets hit the market the situation will only get worse. Hopefully this lesson will be taken on board by makers and OEMs and we’ll see devices that are a lot harder to brick and a lot easier to recover from a bricked state (think how far motherboards have come along in recent years).
[UPDATE: What should you do if you are now the proud owner of a bricked handset? Here's what Microsoft says:
"If your device is in an unrecoverable state, you should contact your mobile operator or device manufacturer regarding your options for repairing your device."
However, at least one Samsung Omnia owner has managed to unbrick their handset by using the Samsung version JK1 firmware.]
[UPDATE 2: WinRumors has outlined a possible fix for the WP7 update handset bricking problem. It's long and convoluted, involved downloading firmware from untrusted sources and there are no guarantees ... but it could bring your bricked handset back to life.]

iTunes privacy hole shares library content with world+dog
A technology researcher has unearthed a privacy hole in Apple's iTunes Store that makes it easy for unauthorized people to learn what music, videos and apps you've acquired from the online bazaar.
The technique, which is described in a recent post by Andrew McAfee, exploits design weaknesses in a feature of the online store that allows one customer to send gifts to another iTunes customer. By creating a list of songs, videos or apps and telling iTunes the email address of the intended recipient, you can find out whether the person already has acquired the title from Apple.
“This is done with good intentions – to keep users from gifting music that the recipient already has – but the implementation of this feature opens up privacy concerns: if the check reveals duplicates, iTunes tells the gifter about one of them,” McAfee writes. “The application presents this information to [the snoop] in red ink, before he has to sign in to his account, present credit card information, or take any other steps.”
What's more, the disclosure happens without notifying or getting permission from the recipient. All that's required is the email address the person uses with her iTunes account. People who exploit the weakness to spy on others need not sign into an account, provide a credit card number or take other steps, McAfee says.
No doubt, music purchases aren't the most sensitive of lists. Plenty of people are more than happy to share their music tastes with anyone who will listen. But as McAfee points out, the Video Privacy Protection Act imposes federal penalties on any person engaged in the business of renting, selling or delivering a “video tape” who publishes information about a customer's viewing habits.
And as Netflix has learned the hard way, publishing even innocuous-seeming details about what movies customers watch can have serious and unintended consequences.
Apple's response when users are gifted titles they've already acquired is in stark contrast to the way Amazon handles Amazon Kindle gifts that the recipient already owns. According to McAfee, Amazon lets the purchase go through, but instead of sending the receiver a title she already owns, gives her credit for the title instead.
“To put it mildly, this seems like a better approach to me,” McAfee says. ®

one of the main points against CSS
However, one of the main points against CSS is that by relying on it exclusively, control is essentially relinquished as each browser has its own quirks which result in a slightly different page display. This is especially a problem as not every browser supports the same subset of CSS rules. There are the means to apply different styles depending on which browser and version are used but incorporating these exceptions makes maintaining the style sheets more difficult as there are styles in more than one place to update.
For designers who are used to table-based layouts, developing web sites in CSS often becomes a matter of trying to replicate what can be done with tables, leading some to find CSS design rather cumbersome due to lack of familiarity. For example, at one time it was rather difficult to produce certain design elements, such as vertical positioning, and full-length footers in a design using absolute positions. With the abundance of CSS resources available online today, though, designing with reasonable adherence to standards involves little more than applying CSS 2.1 or CSS 3 to properly structured markup.
